  1. Hi Everyone,

Previously a question was posted under the contact section and I've moved it here to keep the Contact page cleaner. I've also edited my original answer a bit to include new developments.

Hello! Thanks for organizing this event! I am curious what the $25 entry fee covers. Is there a race t-shirt or finisher's medals given out?

    Hi,

Thanks for your question. The entry fee covers the following:

    1. Membership in the Sunshine Coast Cycling Club. For off-coasters this may not be a big deal but for coast residents, it’s a voice in the local cycling community. The club is working with TraC and other organizations to make road cycling on the coast safer. Also the club has weekly rides and are working on setting up more. The SCC has a lot of new members and directors and they are committed to being a bigger presence on the road scene here.

    2. Insurance both for the club who is hosting the event and insurance for the participating riders. Should you cause personal or property damage to another, you are covered by Cycling BC and their umbrella policy. (Personal injury is covered by your healthcare plan, which for most of us is BC heath care.)

    3. As a rider you are entered into a raffle with prizes donated by our sponsors (See the sponsor page). If you go to the barbeque, you will also get a raffle ticket. The raffle will take place at the barbeque but you won’t have to attend to receive your prize if your name is drawn.

    4. ProBar is one of the sponsors of the event so you will get a bar at the start of the ride. The refreshment stands will also have bars.

    5. The route is marked so you don’t have to find your way.

    6. While you have to consider this to be an unsupported ride, we will have basic support for the riders. Should you have mechanical troubles on the ride, you’ll have my number. I ride sweep and if I can’t fix it, I’ll arrange for someone to pick you up. As we can’t have support vehicles all along the ride it may take a bit of time for the pick-up driver to get to you.
    7. We are trying to arrange refreshment stands along the route. We have one for the 100 km ride on Redroofs Road and are trying to arrange one for the turnaround for the 50 km ride in Davis Bay.

    8. You’ll have fun and hopefully make a lot of new cycling friends.

This isn’t an expensive Gran Fondo on closed roads. It’s a small club trying to get people out riding and having fun and promote road cycling on the coast. I hope that answers your question and I hope to see you there on the 28th.

    Cheers,
    Larry

  2. Hello - Is the rate for returning members correct? It states $45.

Registration: This year, there will be a mandatory sign-up. For insurance purposes you must be a club member to ride. The cost to join the club will be as follows:

    $25 for new SCC members.

$45 for returning members (someone who has been a Cycling BC member within the last 5 years).

  3. Hi,

Thanks for the question. The answer is yes and I must admit that I don't fully understand it. Apparently it's Cycling BC's price structure, not SSC's. My guess is that it's to bring more new members into the Cycling BC fold but that is only a guess.

Please note that the $25 or $45 entry fee is only for club membership and the associated insurance. The SCC Gibsons Grind itself is free. If you are already a club member, you can ride free. (Before anyone gets any bright ideas, we'll be checking to make sure you're on the membership roster). Also, as a club member you'll enjoy other club benefits like being able to participate in the regular club rides as well as discounts at the local bike stores.

I hope that answers your question and I hope you can make it on the 28th.

    Cheers,

    Larry

  4. The Grind was awesome - retaining its local atmosphere and friendliness.
This sounds so childish, but I would really love a 'survivors medal' to mark the occasion of taking part. Just a souvenir of the ride - couldn't Sechelt Sign & Trophy russle something up that's economical. It also spreads the word - when you parade it around next day at work! Thanks for a great event! James.

  5. Hi James,

Thanks for riding and thanks for the comment. I apologize for the slow reply but after the lead-up to the Grind, it's taken me a week to get caught up with life again.

It's unlikely that we'd go the medal route. We're trying to keep costs down and, to be honest, we have pretty limited resources. We could consider t-shirts for those interested. Those who wanted them would buy them and those that just wanted to just ride and keep costs down would have that option as well. But that too will stress our limited volunteer base.

At any rate, I'd like to hear what you or any others have to say about this. If you don't want to comment out in the open, please email me through the contact page.

    Cheers,

    Larry
